  • Abstract This thesis describes the design and synthesis of two types of rod-likeliquid crystals compounds. Series 1: bis[1-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)-3-(3', 4'-dialkoxyphenylamino)prop-2-en-1-one)]copper(Ⅱ). Series 2: (3Z, 6Z)- bis(3, 4-dialkoxybenzylidene)-2,5-piperazinediones). Results indicatedthat the two rod-like compounds exhibited smectic phases. One is rod-like inorganic liquid crystal with single metal. Another is rod-likeorganic liquid crystal.In series 1: the synthesis and charactization of (1-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)-3-(3', 4'-dialkoxyphenylamino)prop-2-en-1-one) and bis[1-(4'-alkoxy-
    phenyl)-3-(3', 4'-dialkoxyphenylamino)prop-2-en-1-one)]copper(Ⅱ)were reported in detail. These rod-like copper complexes exhibited
    smectic C and nematic mesophases, which are characterized by DSCanalysis and optical polarized microscopy. The structure of mesophaseswas confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD).In series 2: the synthesis, charactization and mesomorphic properties ofa new type of liquid crystal compounds; (3Z, 6Z)-bis(3, 4-dialkoxy-benzylidene)-2,5-piperazinediones) are reported. Theses compoundswere derived from unsaturated 2,5-piperazinedione as the core groupand were prepare by condensation reactions of 1,4-diacetyl-2,5-piper-azinedione and 3,4-dialkoxybenzaldehydes. The products werecharacterized by 1H, 13C-NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis,and the phase behavior of these compounds was characterized andstudied by thermal analysis (DSC) and optical polarized microscopy.Results indicated that theses rod-like compounds exhibited smectic C(SC) phases. However, for the derivatives with two flexible alkoxysidechains; (3Z, 6Z)-bis( 4-dialkoxybenzylidene)-2,5-piperazinediones, highly ordered smectic G(SG) phases were formed andalso confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD).
