  • Abstract In this paper, we analyze the acceleration response spectra to study the site effects of strong motion in the Chianan area. We selected 28 events form the TSMIP data since 1993. We obtain the response spectral ratio by dividing the normalized response spectrum of each record by the mean normalized response spectrum of all records for each frequency. The response spectral ratio represents the relative site effect of individual site to the regional mean normalized response spectrum. We classify the strong motion stations into four site types in Chianan area by the amplification at different frequency range of response spectrum. Finally, we study the relationship between site type and site geology. The characteristics of these four site types are as follows: Type one: the stations locate at Tainan terrace, and the amplification of acceleration response spectrum is found at frequency under 1 Hz. Type two: the stations scatter over the alluvial plain of Chianan area, and the acceleration response spectrum of this type is similar to the mean response spectrum of Chianan area. Type three: most stations locate between the alluvial plain and Western Foothills, and the amplification of acceleration response spectrum is found at frequency over 4 Hz. Type four: the stations locate at Western Foothills, and the amplification of acceleration response spectrum is found at frequency between 1 and 4 Hz.
    The dominant frequency of amplification at strong motion stations in Chianan area is related to the physical property of the layer, the distance to the area between the alluvial plain and Western Foothills, the thickness of the alluvial plain, and the distribution of the gravel layer. Type one stations are located at Tainan terrace with thicker thickness and amplify the acceleration response spectra at low frequency (under 1 Hz). Type two station scattered over the alluvial plain of Chianan area, and its acceleration response spectrum is similar to the mean response spectrum of Chianan area. Most of the type three stations located between the alluvial plain and Western Foothills, the thickness of the alluvial plain is thinner, and amplify the acceleration response spectra at high frequency (over 4 Hz). Type four stations located at Western Foothills which is bedrock with thin surface weathering zone and amplify the acceleration response spectra between 1 and 4 Hz.
