  • Abstract All two-stroke motorcycles and scooters sold in Taiwan are
    installed with a catalytic converter. In order to comply with
    the increasing stringent emission regulation, motorcycle makers
    are forced to install secondary air system on the two-stroke
    motorcycle to promote the emission removal capability of the
    catalytic converter. Consequently the catalytic converter
    operates at high temperature and more thermal resistant is
    sought. This work presents the catalyst preparation method that
    can improve the therl stability of the catalytic converter.
    CeO2/Al2O3, CeO2/La2O3/Al2O3 and CeO2/BaO/Al2O3 supports were
    prepared by four method : sol-gel impre-gnation, co-
    precipitation and physical mixing. Then, Pd/CeO2/La2O3/Al2O3 and
    Pd/CeO2/BaO/Al2O3 catalysts were preparation by impregnation of
    Pd solution. The Characterization results of the catalysts
    reveal that the catalyst with support prepared by sol-gel method
    has the largest surface areas, Pd dispersion and the smallest
    CeO2 crystalline size. The TPR result showshat the reduction
    peaks of the catalyst preparation by sol-gel method shifts to
    lower temperature comparison with catalysts prepared by other
    methods. CO and C3H6 oxidation results reveal that Pd catalyst
    prepared by sol-gel method exhibit higher activity then other
    catalyst due to the lower light-off temperature. Additionally,
    the sol-gel method leads to alumina with high surface area,
    better dispersion of cerium oxide, and higher thermal stability
    as compared with conventional methods. The role of La2O3 a BaO
    is to inhibit the sintering of alumina and Pd at high
    temperature.
