  • Abstract In the 1995 ACI code, the design of reinforced concrete beams
    for torsion isbased on space truss analogy . A beam subjected
    to torsion is idealized as athin-walled tube . And the
    resistance is assumed to be provided by the shearflow in the
    thin-walled tube . Once a reinforced concrete beam has
    diagonalcracks, its torsional resistance is primarily provided
    by stirrups and longit-udinal bars in tension and concrete
    struts between diagonal cracks in compres-sion . And this
    constitutes a space truss analogy . Therefore the cleavage
    ofcover is important to use of space truss analogy in the
    torsional strength ofbeams. It is worth making a thorough study.
    This project is mainly to study thenormal strength reinforced
    concrete beams.After the beam cracking and reachingthe ultimate
    torque, we inject Phenolphthalein liquid in these cracks. We
    makeuse of the character that Phenolphthalein liquid will turn
    red in alkalinity .And then we can find the cleavage range in
    red after knocking off the concretecover . The major variables
    considered are the thickness of concrete cover andthe space of
    the stirrups . Two series of 18 beams were made in this test
    ,including longitudinal steel #3 and #5. The results reveal,(1)
    the quantity ofthe concrete cleavage has a increasing
    tendency along with the thicker ofcover and the less space of
    the stirrups , (2) the increasing quantity of theconcrete
    cleavage would change the torsional behavior of beams to follow
    Skew-Bending Theory and Diagonal Compression Field Theory, but
    Space truss Analogy.
