  • Abstract A simple PID tuning method for multivariable system is propo-
    sed in this study. A set of tuning parameters are obtained by
    the procedure of combining sequential design and SISO simplifi-
    ed IMC-PID tuning method with specified detuning factors for
    multiloop feedback controllers. Several examples including some
    well known 2*2 linear systems, a 3*3 linear system and two non-
    linear high purity distillation columns are used to illustrate
    the effectiveness of the MIMO simplified IMC-PID tuning method.
    Simulation results show that the MIMO simplified IMC-PID tuning
    works quite well compared with other tuning methods for
    setp- oint and load disturbance changes. The proposed design
    offers three major advantages. First,very little knowledge of
    process is required; secondly, good performa- nce can be
    obtained with minimal engineering effort; thirdly, the
    MIMO simplified IMC-PID tuning method works well even for the
    very difficult process in a very simple way.
